Onward Readers is based on the Common Core State Standards in English Language Arts for Literature and Informational Text as well as the Foundational Skills for Reading. Onward Readers uses both literature and informational texts from Houghton Mifflin’s Journeys anthologies and leveled readers as well as existing resources at each school site. Each instructional sequence employs multiple exposures to comprehension strategies. The initiative provides instructional methodology, graphic organizers, formative and summative assessments, and rubrics. However, each school site is encouraged to modify instruction to meet student needs.
Each instructional component utilizes Core Instructional Practices – Objective, Assessment, and Methodology.
To achieve maximum impact on student learning, Onward Readers should not be viewed as an isolated part of the school day. It is intended to model a cultural shift in the educational practices of the school.
