Early Literacy Program

Piloted at Mother of Sorrows School in the fall of 2012, the Early Literacy Program is designed to support the home learning environments of toddlers in the community. Weekly 45-minute sessions are held at each Onward Readers school site for toddlers and their caregivers utilizing Scholastic’s Cozy Corner as well as other resources.

This first school experience for toddlers and their caregivers encourages the growth of early literacy skills in print awareness, phonological awareness, engagement in printed texts, and vocabulary. Caregivers are empowered to build a home learning environment for their toddlers and thereby support their future school readiness in preschool and kindergarten.

Upon the completion of the program, research has shown that the Early Literacy Program positively impacts both the toddlers and caregivers.

  • Caregivers expressed an increase of storytime and toddler-appropriate texts in the home.
  • Toddlers showed an increase of mastery in print awareness, phonological awareness, engagement in printer text, and vocabulary development.
  • Caregivers communicated an increased recognition that creating a culture of school readiness is the joint responsibility of the school and home environment.
